Most Moving Companies are Honest in Business: it’s up to your to be vigilent

It is getting to be Handy Moves busy time of year but, our London-based moving company is used to being busy during the summer months. We have been in business for over 15 years so have learned a thing or two about time-management and keeping our customers happy. One thing our moving company does not do, unlike some of the other moving companies, is to use labourers instead of designated company operatives. All of our operatives wear the company uniform and carry with them references and identity details issued to them when they started working with our moving company. For the moving industry generally, about 55% of the removals’ business is carried out during the months of summer.

Complaints about Moving Companies are Increasing
Problems do occur although most of them can be readily resolved in the majority of cases. However, the National Guild of Removers and Storers [NGRS] and the British Association of Removers [BAR] do tend to get quite a number of complaints from unhappy customers, with the numbers increasing, mainly due to some moving companies running a range of internet scams of greater or lesser importance. This doesn’t just happen in the UK, but in other countries as well. In the USA, for instance, the numbers of complaints made to the Council of Better Business Bureaus has risen from around 3,800 in 1997 to over 9,200 during 2007. Meanwhile, the Department of Transportation receives 4,000 complaints annually about greater or lesser discrepancies experienced by dis-satisfied customers.

Checklist when Trying to Find a Moving Company
Remember that when you are relocating to a new property your possessions are going to be trusted to a completely unknown source. For your peace of mind you need to know that they are going to be safe during transit. So, one of the first things you need to do is check the background of the moving company. The best way to do this is to ask the right questions and assiduously check any paperwork – especially the small print! Listen to your ‘gut’ feeling: if you feel that something’s not right, even though you can’t quite put your finger on what’s troubling you, take note of your gut feeling because you are probably right. Basically, if you are in any doubt at all, don’t sign the contract.

Another thing to check out is whether the quote you have been given is similar to that being charged by other companies. Obviously it is going to take a definitive estimate to get an exact figure, but you can at least get an idea from comparing various moving company websites. If you are at all worried about scams involving moving companies then check on the internet to see if there are any forums or websites devoted to sharing information with the general public about dubious moving companies.

How to Check that a Moving Company is Suitable
Whilst you would certainly prefer not to have any problems when dealing with a removal company and would do your best to try and avoid fraudulent companies, it is important to remember that the majority of moving companies are honest and professional, with a friendly and courteous removals’ team. Clearly, it is up to you to be vigilant but most people in business are there to make an honest living regardless of which niche they happen to be working in.
