At a Time When it Pays to be Careful, Handy Moves Continues to be Efficient and Honest

When customers’ minds are so full of the actual move and all the arrangements they have to make is filling their minds it is an ideal time for an honest and professional moving company such as Handy Moves, with their 15 years experience and courteous, friendly staff, to step in and convince their potential customers that they will take over all the removal arrangements, including the packing, and present the customer with all the documentation, including insurance, to prove what a legitimate and professional moving company actually looks like.

Unsuspecting Customers
Most people would assume that moving companies are in the business of relocating customers from one place to another, taking care that their possessions are safe in transit, with unpacking at the other end accomplished safely. Despite this generally being the case, there are those who make a business of fleecing their customers as much as they can get away with. Take the case of the removal company in the USA who charged an unsuspecting customer an unbelievably low price of just $1,800 [£1,227.00GBP] for a move from Virginia to Nevada, a move of around 2,500 miles. This was such an unrealistically silly price that the customer should have had sufficient nous to question the price.

Nevertheless, the customer went ahead with the move and found out that as soon as his belongings had been loaded into the truck the moving company hiked the price up to $5,012
[£3,418GBP]. We are not necessarily talking scams here, rather naivety or the part of the customer and ‘sailing close to the wind’ on the side of the moving company. Basically, the quote was unrealistically low but, once the customer’s belongings had been loaded into the truck and it was possible to measure the cubic feet accurately, it was quite clear that the customer had been undercharged. The lesson to the customer was clearly to get a contract in writing. As it happened, the moving company held onto the customer’s possessions until he had stumped up the balance 6 weeks later!

Hidden Extras
The story mentioned above may have happened in the USA but it is by no means an isolated incident and happens on both sides of the Pond. In fact, there are few tricks moving companies can get up to in the US that they can’t get up to on a smaller scale in the UK. To avoid being taken for a ride, always check your contract and read the terms and conditions, even the smallest of small print, no matter how difficult it is to see. If you have a contract everything should be set out completely clearly, with a full explanation of what you have been charged and why. Your estimate will make it quite clear whether you are being charged by mileage or whether your charge is according to an overall weight, or even if it has been measured in cubic feet.

If you have arranged for the moving company to professionally pack your belongings you need to have written into the contract whether or not the packaging has been included in with the overall cost of your removal expenses, whether the packaging is being charged separately from the actual packing, or even whether the packaging and packing are fully inclusive. Gets complicated, doesn’t it? It’s hardly surprising that it is so easy to pull the wool over a harassed customer’s eyes.
